According to Kynetec Consulting, the soybean planting area in Brazil increased by 6% in 2022-23, exceeding 42 million hectares. The sales of pesticides used for soybean crops reached 11.4 billion US dollars, an increase of 50% compared to the previous year's 7.657 billion US dollars.
Kynetec account manager Lucas Lima Alves stated that herbicides, as the product with the highest demand, account for 35% of total pesticide sales ($4.1 billion), an increase of 70% in US dollars compared to the 2021-22 production year ($2.391 billion). The proportion of planting area treated with herbicides increased from 46% in 2018-19 to 77% in 2022-23.
Alves explained that the reason for the increase in herbicide value is the increased cost of key products used for crop management, including glyphosate, which accounts for nearly 60% of herbicide trading volume. After investigation, it was found that due to the emergence of difficult to control herbaceous plants such as two-eared grass and chicken foot grass, growers have increased the use of specific herbicides such as gramineae herbicides and pre seedling herbicides.
The use rate of residual pre seedling herbicides has increased from 34% in 2020-21 to 45%, which helps control seed banks and prevent weed germination.
According to the 2022-23 data survey, fungicides rank second among the most commonly used agricultural chemicals in oil crops, with sales of $3.7 billion, accounting for 33% of the total pesticide sales, up 43% from $2.613 billion in the previous year.
The sales of pesticides reached $2.4 billion, accounting for 21% of the total sales of pesticides, a significant increase of 40% compared to the previous year's $1.721 billion, which also drove the performance of the industry.
In addition, Kynetec learned through face-to-face interviews with 3700 soybean growers that the total sales of seed processing products, nematicides, and other products were approximately $1.2 billion.
