US EPA requires all pesticide products to achieve bilingual labeling by 2031

Release time:2024-09-29

The Pesticide Registration Improvement Act of 2022 (PRIA 5) requires the safety and health sections on pesticide product labels to be translated into Spanish. Spanish is the primary language of most American farm workers. This work will make health and safety information on pesticide labels more accessible, promote better understanding and compliance with label instructions, and advance environmental justice.

Starting from December 29, 2025, the health and safety sections on the labels of pesticide restricted products and the most toxic agricultural products will be required to provide a Spanish translation. After the first stage, pesticide labels must include these translated contents according to the product type and toxicity category on a rolling schedule, with the most dangerous and toxic pesticide products requiring translation first. By 2030, all pesticide labels must have a Spanish translation. The translation must appear on the pesticide product container or be provided through hyperlinks or other easily accessible electronic means.

New and updated resources include guidance on the implementation schedule for bilingual labeling requirements based on the toxicity of various pesticide products, as well as common questions and answers related to this requirement.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aims to ensure that the transition to bilingual labeling improves accessibility for pesticide users, pesticide applicators, and farm workers, making pesticides safer for humans and the environment. EPA plans to update these website resources to meet various PRIA 5 requirements and deadlines, and provide new information. These resources will be presented on the EPA website in English and Spanish.
